Historical Background
The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine (ACCPM) was established in 1923 G.C. when surgical services were first introduced at ALERT Hospital. It initially began with a limited number of anesthetists and gradually evolved into the comprehensive unit it is today, providing a full spectrum of anesthesia, critical care, and pain management services to patients from various regions.
Yearly Performance
Each year, the department achieves significant milestones, including:
- 9,500 emergency and elective surgical operations
- 9,500 pre-operative anesthesia evaluations
- 400 Intensive Care Unit admissions
- Ongoing consultation and care for numerous patients requiring specialized pain management
Qualifications & Number of Health Professionals
The department is staffed with a highly skilled team, including:
- 7 specialists in Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine
- 3 anesthetists with MSc qualifications
- 31 anesthetists with BSc qualifications
- 2 OPD nurses
Facilities & Equipment
To ensure high-quality care, the department oversees:
- 15 operating tables (including trauma, general, major OR, gyne/obs, and minor OR tables)
- 1 pre-anesthesia clinic for preoperative assessments
- Access to dedicated wards, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Specialized equipment for invasive monitoring (arterial and central lines), mechanical ventilation, and pain management interventions
Teaching & Training Services
The department is actively involved in training and capacity-building through:
- Collaboration with the hospital’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training center
- Regular training sessions on ICU care, post-anesthesia care, and pain management
- On-the-job training for junior staff in operating rooms, ICUs, and the PACU
- Specialized workshops on BLS, ACLS, airway management, mechanical ventilation, sedation/analgesia, and ECG interpretation
