The Department of Neurosurgery at ALERT comprehensive specialized hospital treats the full range of surgical diseases that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems and conditions affecting the skull, brain, spinal cord, spine, and peripheral nerves.
Our team includes experts in all major areas of neurosurgery. Through collaboration with Addis Ababa University and other disciplines, we leverage the extensive strengths of ALERT comprehensive specialized hospitals to offer the highest level of comprehensive care.
Our neurosurgeons employ the most advanced surgical tools, from endoscopic spine, and C arm guided to minimally invasive spinal or brain surgery equipment. We partner with the Federal Ministry of Health and Addis Ababa University to ensure that we have access to and influence the next generation of surgical technology. In addition to providing the highest level of neurosurgical care, we advance neurosurgery knowledge and practice through research and innovation. We are a team of highly skilled and experienced neurosurgeons dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients. Historical back ground
The inception of the ALERT Hospital Neurosurgery Department coincided with the establishment of the trauma center in 2007 G.C. Initially focused on emergency surgeries for head and spine injuries, the department later expanded its scope to include elective cases. In September 2014, the Ministry of Health orchestrated a pivotal meeting with professionals in emergency medicine, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and General Surgery at the rehabilitation center of Black Lion Hospital. This gathering aimed to discuss the imperative expansion of the trauma center beyond Black Lion Hospital, responding to the escalating demand for trauma patient care.
During this meeting, Neurosurgery garnered significant attention, and a transformative initiative was set into motion. On October 25, 2014, a joint team of professionals from Neurosurgery, along with the administrative team from ALERT, visited ALERT Hospital. The subsequent report was presented to the Minister of Health, leading to in-depth discussions about the government's vision and the Ministry of Health's strategic direction. Consequently, a decision was reached to repurpose the administrative building into a trauma center with a neurosurgical focus, aligning with the Addis Ababa master plan. The construction of the building was completed in June 2015, and the Ministry of Health furnished the new center with essential equipment. The Neurosurgery unit also acquired basic neurosurgery sets from Black Lion Hospital, formalizing the collaboration through a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Ministry of Health, ALERT, and Addis Ababa University. This agreement stipulated that the center would be led by the Department of Neurosurgery under the management of ALERT.
June 19, 2015, marked a historic milestone as the new center admitted its first two patients and successfully performed major neurosurgical operations, including Craniotomy. This significant event signified the beginning of a dedicated era for the Neurosurgery Department at ALERT Hospital, further enhancing its capabilities in providing advanced neurosurgical care.
Yearly Performance
On an annual basis, the department conducts an average of three hundred thirty major neurosurgeries, comprising two hundred twenty cranial surgeries and one hundred ten spinal surgeries.

The department is comprised of a skilled team of healthcare professionals, including:
- Neurosurgeons from ALERT Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Addis Abeba University, Black Lion Specialized Hospital
- Neurosurgery residents
- Clinical nurses

The department possesses two surgical tables.
Number of beds
The department is equipped with a total of twelve Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and seventeen ward beds, which include five in the male ward, two in the female ward, and eleven common beds shared with other departments.
Teaching/ Training Services
Faculty members within the department play a pivotal role in training and mentoring residents and fellows at Addis Ababa University Neurosurgery unit. Simultaneously, neurosurgery investigators at ALERT Comprehensive and Specialized Hospital are committed to advancing patient care through innovative research endeavors that span discovery science, translation, and clinical applications. Driven by a patient-centric approach, our overarching goal is to enhance patient care through a multifaceted and multidisciplinary strategy, encompassing basic science research, clinical studies, and outcomes research.
Our investigators meticulously assess how current therapies influence outcomes and quality of life, contributing to the ongoing refinement and enhancement of patient care.
Collaborative research efforts extend to various tertiary hospitals across the country, fostering a collective endeavor to build a robust database for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, and injuries to the brain and spinal cord.
Comprising experts in all major areas of neurosurgery, our team collaborates with Addis Ababa University and other disciplines. This collaborative approach harnesses the comprehensive strengths of ALERT Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, ensuring the delivery of the highest level of comprehensive care to our patients.

The department delivers emergency, routine outpatient, and inpatient services.
Service Hours
The department extends the aforementioned services across both public and private wings. While all services mentioned are available during regular working hours on weekdays, emergency and inpatient services remain accessible outside of working hours, ensuring continuous coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our areas of specialization encompass spine trauma, degenerative diseases, endoscopic spine surgery, spinal tumors, neurotrauma, and C-arm guided spine injections. In addition, our clinic is adept at diagnosing and treating various neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumors, spinal disorders, peripheral nerve disorders, traumatic brain injuries, hydrocephalus, spina bifida, and Chiari malformations.
