About Alert
The All-Africa Leprosy, Tuberculosis, and Rehabilitation Training Centre (ALERT) originated as a leprosarium established by the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) in 1934. Originally named Princess Zenebework Memorial Hospital by Emperor H/ Selassie I, it garnered significant attention and underwent a transformative shift on December 11, 1965 G.C. In response to the escalating prevalence and impact of leprosy in Africa, numerous international donor agencies conceptualized the establishment of a leprosy training center, leading to the conversion of Princess Zenebework Memorial Hospital into ALERT.
As the foremost Referral Hospital for leprosy treatment and associated complications in the country, ALERT holds a distinguished status. Recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an international Leprosy training Center, ALERT attained WHO collaborating center status for Leprosy training in 1988. The hospital has effectively managed field programs, yielding numerous published operational research findings, particularly with the implementation of Multiple Drug Therapy (MDT).
Located in Addis Ababa, Kolfe Keranyo subcity, Alert has been addressing health problems related to leprosy in our country and has been the only medical research center in this field for the past ninety years. Since 1995, Ethiopia has integrated a combined leprosy tuberculosis control program into basic health services. Administration of ALERT was transferred to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia 's Ministry of Health in 2002. Renowned as the pioneer and the third-largest hospital in the nation by patient flow, ALERT serves over 1,500 patients daily and caters to more than 450,000 patients annually.
