As the Head of the Department of Surgery at Alert comprehensive specialized Hospital, I am privileged to lead a team of dedicated professionals, who are committed to excellence in patient care, education, and research. Established just 11 years ago, our department has rapidly grown into a dynamic and diverse surgical center. We offer a range of specialized units, including Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Urology Surgery, and HPB Surgery, in addition to our comprehensive General Surgery service

At the Department of General Surgery, we are committed to maintaining the h highest standards of patient care, innovation, and research. With our multidisciplinary approach, we are dedicated to improving surgical techniques and outcomes, resulting in enhanced patient satisfaction. As the leading trauma center of the country, we will be continuing Specialized General Surgery Services for Trauma Patients.

We are also eagerly looking forward to the launch of our Surgical Residency Training Program, designed to nurture the next generation of surgical leaders and under graduate medical training in the far future.

Lastly but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our talented team's hard work and dedication. Their commitment to patient care is the cornerstone of our department's success.

Historical back ground

The Department of General Surgery, responding to a surge in demand for surgical services, was established in October 2016 G.C. Initially led by a single general surgeon, the department has since expanded, welcoming seasoned surgeons with diverse experiences from specialized hospitals and teaching institutions.

An integral component of our hospital, the Surgery Department has played a pivotal role in supporting ALERT Trauma Center since its inception. Beyond trauma care, the department is actively involved in pediatric emergency and elective cases. Furthermore, it provides consultations to various departments and case teams within our hospital.

The department primarily caters to patients from Kolfe-Keranyo, Nefas Silk Lafto Sub city, the southwestern regions of Addis Ababa, nearby Oromia regional cities and towns, as well as the SNNPR region.

Yearly Performance

Annually, the department achieves the following milestones in its dedicated service:

  1. More than 2,000 surgeries
  2. Over 2,500 admissions
  3. Exceeding 12,800 outpatient follow-ups

The General Surgery Department comprises a skilled team of healthcare professionals, including:

Number of Operating Tables/Theaters

The department is equipped with two surgical operation theaters featuring two operating tables dedicated to major surgeries and an additional two tables for minor cases.

Number of beds

The department encompasses a total of sixty-three beds, distributed as follows:

  1. 18 beds in the General Surgery ward
  2. 5 beds in the Trauma ward
  3. 22 beds in the Ophthalmology ward
  4. 18 beds in Ward 9

Teaching/ Training Services

The department offers training for medical interns and residents hailing from various universities.

Forms of Services

The department delivers emergency, routine outpatient, and inpatient services.

Service Hours

The department extends the aforementioned services across both public and private wings. While all services mentioned are available during regular working hours on weekdays, emergency and inpatient services remain accessible outside of working hours, ensuring continuous coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
