Historical back ground

The Department of Dermato-venereology at ALERT Hospital traces its roots back to the 1950s, when it officially became a department. However, the provision of dermatology services commenced with the hospital's establishment in 1932.

Collaborating closely with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the department plays a vital role in supporting leprosy referral centers across Ethiopia, providing not only expertise but also undertaking supportive supervision of these sites. Serving as the highest dermatology referral hospital in the country, it receives patients from all corners of Ethiopia, including offering private wing services during weekends and after regular working hours.

In a bid to enhance accessibility to dermatological expertise, the ALERT Dermatology department has pioneered video conferencing-based Tele-Dermatology. This innovative approach allows our dermatologists to remotely assist and consult on complicated cases from referral centers, eliminating the need for patients to undergo extensive travel to reach Addis Ababa. This has significantly improved patient comfort and reduced referral rates.

Looking ahead, the department envisions establishing a national dermatology center that will emerge as a leader in dermatologic medical tourism, medical services, and training. Plans are also underway to initiate an independent residency program after obtaining medical college status. Furthermore, the introduction of phototherapy is on the horizon, further expanding the range of specialized services provided by the department.
